Legend of the Native
American Flute
The Legend comes from several different Tribes throughout North America. The Stories are all very similar, with minor differences. I am presenting my version of the story as I invision it.
Love had taken his heart, the young brave could not let go of these feelings that had taken hold of him. She was unaware of the constant struggle he was in, and our young brave was always trying hard to get more of her attention.
One day, while off on an exploration, he heard a sound that he did not recognize. Similar to a bird but not quite the same as any he had heard before, then another sound slightly different than the first, he followed the sound and came to a clearing. A vast open feild of grass with the wind blowing steadily. The sound was coming from a fallen branch.
He picked up the branch and the sound stopped. The branch had been hollowed out some and had a couple holes in it from birds looking for insects. When he held the branch at the right angle, the wind would create the music from the branch. It did not take him long to figure out how it was working. He hollowed the branch some more and added a few holes to it. He soon found he could blow into it himself and create the sounds of music. He began to practice secretly until he was confident he could play a song to capture the heart of his love.
The day soon came when he decided he was ready and he invited her to go for a walk with him. On this walk he played his song for her, she was taken in by the beauty of the song and could no longer resist his charms and fell in love with him as well...
It is said that when you find your true love they will not be able to resist your song and will be drawn to you by the powers of the music from the Flute. This is why the Native American Flute is also sometimes called the Love Flute or Courting Flute.
